Peter Straughan won his first Golden Globe Award on Sunday, scoring for Best Screenplay — Motion Picture for Conclave.
The Papal whodunnit Conclave, written by Straughan who adapted the book of the same name by Robert Harris, set in the Vatican follows Ralph Fiennes as Cardinal Lawrence, a man of faith challenged by personal doubts after the death of the current pope reveals corruption and secrets within the Church.
“I am one pure ball of gratitude squeezed into a tux,” Straughan said on stage as he thanked the cast and crew. “Thank you Robert Harris for writing a gift of a book, half third of this is yours. Edward Berger, a dream director, you get a third of this. [Our] fantastic ensemble cast, I can’t give you a third of this because I’ve just done the maths and that wouldn’t leave me with anything. You can borrow this any weekend you want.”
Conclave also scored six nominations in Best Motion Picture—Drama, Best Original Score—Motion Picture, Best Director for Edward Berger and acting noms for Fiennes and Isabella Rossellini.
