Studiocanal has taken the rest of all media global rights on Mike Figgis‘ documentary Megadoc, which follows the making of Francis Ford Coppola’s $120 million-plus cinematic opus, Megalopolis. Deadline previously reported that Robert Schwartzman’s Utopia has North America on Megadoc.
The documentary will have its world premiere in the Venice Classics section at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival, today, August 28th in Sala Corinto.
The doc follows The Godfather franchise filmmaker’s decades-long journey to get his self-financed passion project off the ground. Figgis weaves together archival material, unfiltered cast interviews, and a close-up view of how Coppola drew from Roman history, political allegory, and his own singular vision to shape the world of Megalopolis.
“The great filmmaker Mike Figgis shot the making of Megalopolis as he saw it,” said in a statement. “Interestingly, there are many interpretations of what really happened and it’s all in the documentary although the documentary doesn’t always say which is what…it is for the viewer to behold and interpret.”
Figgis added, “I shamelessly offered myself up as a fly on the wall for the production of the shooting of Megalopolis. What a privilege to watch this mighty clash of the Titans as maestro Francis Ford Coppola takes on the universe.”
James Mockoski, the producer of Megadoc, says, “Studiocanal has always been a home for the films of Francis Ford Coppola, and we are excited to have Megadoc become part of the Studiocanal and Coppola collection.”
Studiocana EVP of Library, Juliette Hochart, said, “At Studiocanal, we’re proud to represent Francis Ford Coppola’s films, so it feels only natural for us to handle the distribution of Mike Figgis’ documentary exploring the work of this legendary filmmaker.”
