‘English Teacher’ Renewed For Season 2; FX Comedy Stars Brian Jordan Alvarez

FX has renewed English Teacher, its comedy series created by and starring Brian Jordan Alvarez. The 10-episode second season will premiere in 2025.

English Teacher was one of the most critically acclaimed new shows of 2024 and we are grateful to the producers, writers, cast, directors and crew for the show’s creative excellence,” said President Nick Grad. “We look forward to the new season.”

Alvarez plays Evan Marquez, a high school teacher in Austin, Texas who often finds himself at the intersection of the personal, professional and political aspects of working at a high school. Over the first season, Evan navigates his relationships, his students and his fellow faculty and tries to answer the question: can you really be your full self at your job?

The comedy’s first season was highlighted by good reviews and nominations by Critics Choice, the Film Independent Spirit Awards, and the WGA. But it was also put under heavy scrutiny when a former indie film colleague named Jon Ebeling made allegations of sexual assault against Alvarez on his Instagram page in August of 2024.

The alleged incident occurred while the two co-starred in the 2016 YouTube series The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo. The duo were performing a sexual scene when Alvarez put his mouth on Ebeling’s penis without receiving prior consent. Deadline spoke to Ebeling about the incident.

Alvarez, through his crisis team, said the act was consensual, given the behavior that occurred off camera between the two actors almost two months prior to filming. Ebeling told Deadline that he knew Alvarez had developed feelings for him and one night allowed Alvarez to perform oral sex on him.

In a New York Magazine article from December, Alvarez’ lawyer Michael J. Kump acknowledged that “Brian briefly made contact with Mr. Ebeling’s penis under the covers, believing that Mr. Ebeling was fine with it.” He went on to accuse Ebeling of being “performative” with his anger since the actor was in a romantic relationship with their Caleb Gallo co-star Stephanie Koenig, who also stars in English Teacher.
