FoxLA weeknight newscasts will look different beginning August 16.
That’s because anchor Elex Michaelson announced today he is leaving the station — also known as Fox 11 — for an undisclosed new opportunity.
“I’ve made the difficult decision to leave @FOXLA to pursue an exciting new opportunity…that I’m not allowed to talk about just yet,” he said in a video post to X. “My last day at the station is Friday August 15th.”
Michaelson co-anchors Fox 11 News weeknights at 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. with Christine Devine. He also co-hosts the weeknight Fox 11 News at 6 p.m. with Marla Tellez. Those are significant posts, given that FoxLA is the West Coast flagship station of the Fox network. He also hosts and produces the political talk show The Issue Is, which airs Friday nights at 10:30 p.m. on Fox 11.
Michaelson is stalwart in his coverage local and state politics. He’s interviewed everyone from Karen Bass to Rick Caruso to Arnold Schwarzenegger to Gavin Newsom. Much of his reporting of late has been devoted to immigration as well as the coming races to replace Newsom and for L.A.’s mayorship. He also covers as sports stories, interviewing Clayton Kershaw and following the Lakers’ resigning of Luka Doncic for his social media fanbase.
While the weeknight anchor says he isn’t allowed to talk about the new opportunity, it’s worth noting his announcement comes one day after Fox 11 parent company News Corp. announced it plans to launch the California Post, a Los Angeles-based tabloid with the flavor of the New York Post, early next year. Politics and sports — two of Michaelson’s passions — would seem to be key elements of such a project.
