General Motors is laying off thousands of employees at multiple electric vehicle and battery plants in the United States, according to multiple news outlets.
Approximately 1,200 employees at the company’s EV factory in Detroit, Michigan have been placed on “indefinite layoffs.” Further job cuts and layoffs are occurring at GM’s Ultium Cells battery plants in Ohio and Tennessee. According to the Wall Street Journal, GM plans to shut down these battery factories starting January 5 and restart production in mid-2026.
The layoffs come just days after GM announced cuts to some white-collar employees and a $1.6 billion hit as it overhauls its electric vehicle program.
GM also recently ended its BrightDrop commercial electric van program. The company and many of its rivals are scaling back their promotion of electric vehicles in the U.S. following the loss of federal tax credits and loosening regulations for internal combustion engine vehicles.
