Man United held contract talks with Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan in the summer before signing Senne Lamence, according to reports.
The Red Devils spent more than £200m on new signings in the summer transfer window, with Lamence arriving on deadline day to strengthen their goalkeeping position.
Andre Onana was under a lot of pressure last season after making a high-profile mistake that saw the Cameroon international move to Turkish side Trabzonspor on loan until the end of the season.
Rumors had been circulating leading up to deadline day that Manchester United could choose to sign Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez over Lamence.
Subsequent reports claimed that the Red Devils liked Lamence’s “younger profile” and that Martinez “would have cost United twice as much, asking for wages in the region of £200,000-a-week”.
Now, French newspaper L’Equipe (via Get French Football News) claim there is another goalkeeper Man United have been eyeing during the summer transfer window.

AC Milan goalkeeper Maignan was “the subject of offers not only from Chelsea but also from Manchester United” during the summer, but “never has he been this close to leaving.”
The newspaper added: “L’Equipe has revealed that, like Galatasaray, Manchester United were also about to begin contract negotiations with Maignan.” However, either this project did not suit the Frenchman or the Serie A side blocked the move. Negotiations to extend his contract with AC Milan are still ongoing, but no progress has been made. Although no final decision has been made, it is likely that he will leave on a free transfer in the summer.
Cameroonian journalist Remy Ngono claimed after Onana’s loan move that the goalkeeper should not have joined Man United and that he was a “sacrificial lamb” in a poor season.

Ngono said: “I was the only one in this set who said Onana shouldn’t go to Manchester United and it would be a huge failure.
He added: “It was Andre Onana who lost confidence. He shouldn’t have gone to that Manchester United team.”
“My fault for Manchester United is that Onana is becoming the sacrificial lamb, because no one will tell you that Amorim arrived and only scored 31 out of 90 points in 30 games, and that Onana was the cause of it all!”
