Anthropic has a new Chief Technical Officer, former Stripe CTO Rahul Patil. Patil started with the company earlier this week, taking over from co-founder Sam McCandrisch, who will move into a new role as Chief Architect.
As part of the changes, humanity has updated the structure of the Core Technical Group, bringing the company’s product engineering team in close contact with the infrastructure and inference teams. As CTO, Patil oversees a variety of computing, infrastructure, inference, and other engineering tasks. In the role of Chief Architect, McCandlish will work on pre-training and large-scale model training, expanding much of his previous work. Both Patil and McCandlish report to the President of Mankind Daniela Amody.
This new leadership structure is as humanity faces fierce infrastructure competition with Openai and Meta’s AI Labs, which have invested billions in computing infrastructure. Mark Zuckerberg says Meta is expected to spend $600 billion on US infrastructure by the end of 2028, and Openai has contracted similar amounts through work with Oracle and The Stargate Project. The scale of humanity’s own infrastructure spending is less clear, but there is a great deal of pressure to optimize infrastructure that grows in both speed and power consumption.
At the same time, the popularity of Anthropic’s Claude products has already put the company’s infrastructure under great tension. In July, the company introduced a new rate limiting on Claude Code. This focuses on power users who ran the app “Continuously 24/7 in the background.” The new rules limit users to sonnet usage of 240-480 hours each week, and to OPUS 4 usage of 24-40 hours depending on infrastructure stocks.
Over 20 years in different engineering roles, Patil brings critical infrastructure experience to humanity. He previously spent five years in a technical role at Stripe, serving as senior VP of Oracle’s Cloud Infrastructure. He also has engineering roles at Amazon and Microsoft.
In a statement, Amodei highlighted Patil’s experience in building a stable infrastructure for businesses. “Rahul brings a proven track record in building and expanding the reliable infrastructure that businesses need,” the statement reads. “We couldn’t be more excited about what this means to strengthen Claude’s position as a major intelligence platform for businesses.”
In the pair’s statement, Patil praised humanity’s research and its commitment to AI safety. “We are excited to be able to participate in humanity at this pivotal moment in AI development,” Patil said.
