Former Manchester United midfielders Roy Keane and Paul Scholes have differing opinions on who is the best in the league, with the former naming Arsenal players “on a daily basis”.
Some midfielders in the Premier League are having phenomenal seasons. This season saw incredible performances from Sandro Tonali, Moises Caicedo and Declan Rice.
Caicedo’s most recent contribution to Chelsea was firing the ball into the corner of the goal in a 2-1 win against then-leaders Liverpool.
Rice, on the other hand, has been directly involved in four league goals this season, while Tonali has only provided one assist, but has become a vital cog for Newcastle.
For former United midfielder Scholes, he is currently the best player in the league.
“I still don’t classify Moises Caicedo as an all-round midfielder. I know he scores great goals and he was great the other day.”
“Alexis Mac Allister was really good last season. He controlled a lot of games and I think Liverpool are missing that right now. I also love Sandro Tonali. He was great, very good. I would probably choose Tonali at the moment.”
But Scholes’ former midfield partner Keane disagrees with him.
He said on Stick To Football: “I’ll pick Rice every day. That package. He has a little more room in all the other parts of Caicedo. I’ll pick Rice.”
Rice has been absolutely delighted heading into this season and has become a very well-rounded midfielder since joining Arsenal in 2023.
He and Caicedo paid hefty transfer fees of over £100m to Arsenal and Chelsea respectively, but both have shown they are worth spending such large sums.

With F365’s definitive Premier League midfielder rankings, we certainly have the best player in the division, but he’s not the only one in that position.
We have devised a points system using various metrics such as goals, assists, progressive carries, pass completions, tackles, and interceptions.
Along with Caicedo, another man who has used that system to rise to the top is Liverpool’s Ryan Gravenbirch.
The Liverpool man ranks highest in shot creation action and progressive distance, but ranks high in many other metrics despite not being the best in each.
It suggests that he is the most balanced. You can read the article below.
