Social movie discovery platform Letterboxd will launch a new digital video store in early December, allowing users to rent movies directly on the platform. The company first announced the feature in March during the Cannes Film Festival, but did not provide a specific launch date at the time.
In a recent blog post, the company revealed details of a “video store” that will feature a variety of movies. The selection includes “festival highlights” that have not yet been widely distributed, films that are rarely available but are frequently watchlisted by users, recent restorations, and other special limited-time releases.
The launch of a video store feels like a natural evolution for Letterboxd, allowing users to instantly rent movies without leaving the platform. One of the main advantages of renting from Letterboxd compared to other established platforms like Apple or Amazon is its social discoverability feature. If you notice that a friend has registered a movie, you can check their reviews and decide whether to rent it on the spot.
Movie selection is also based on what members actually want to see, using the platform’s watchlist and activity data. The selections feel more curated, rather than offering a random combination like some streaming services.
Letterboxd has not yet announced an initial lineup of movies or rental prices, but the company said users can expect rental availability and prices to vary by location. Notably, the platform does not operate on a subscription model and does not incur late fees.
This new feature is compatible with iOS and Android devices, as well as Apple TV, Android TV, Chromecast, and AirPlay, with additional smart TV apps coming at a later date.
Letterboxd has been actively updating its platform to improve discovery for movie fans since it was acquired by Canadian company Tiny in 2023 for approximately $50 million. We recently introduced “Featured Lists” to help users find movie collections organized by genre, studio, female director, and other themes. Last year, the company upgraded its search features to be more advanced, allowing users to understand acronyms and correct misspellings.
