Liverpool’s presence in the race for Bayern Munich’s forward makes it “financially unchallenged” for another European giant to win.
The Reds spent the bulk of their nearly £450m summer spend on attacking third players. In fact, the three most expensive players were Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike.
Ekitike has gotten off to a decent start with six goals and one assist, although we’ve gotten little from the former pair so far.
Liverpool remain linked with the forward given the difficulties faced by other signings and the fact that they currently sit eighth in the Premier League with five defeats from 11 games.
Their interest in the Bayern Munich star would be detrimental to the European giants. Gazzetta dello Sport report that “competition with Liverpool” would make Serge Gnabry’s move to Juventus an “impossible” financial challenge.
That, and the fact that an investigation revealed that the winger’s salary was unaffordable, means that Juventus’ interest in the winger has waned.
Gnabry’s contract with Bayern expires at the end of this season, but he would be in a good position to be picked up elsewhere if he does not renew with the Bundesliga giants.
In fact, in nine Bundesliga appearances so far this season, the 30-year-old has scored four goals and provided three assists.
There are also reports that Gnabry’s good form suggests the possibility of a new contract.
Bayern manager Max Eberl refused to give any indication as to whether the winger would sign a new contract, saying: “I think Serge has made great progress under Vincent (Kompany). His performances are a good argument for him, but also good for us. His contract expires next summer. If there is a signal, we will send it internally, not to you.”
More about Liverpool from F365:
👉 Liverpool fans trying to “fight back” on season expectations are “utter nonsense”
👉 Liverpool will ‘improve dramatically’ but may need to let Wirtz go first
👉 “It’s clear there will be revenge against Liverpool” and other less spiritual views
Even if he were to become available for free, it wouldn’t be a big risk for interested teams considering they would only be paid his salary.
That said, the last time he played in England, Gnabry failed to make an impact at either West Brom or Arsenal, but made an immediate impact upon his move to Werder Bremen.
This suggests he may simply be a better fit in Germany than England, and Liverpool could certainly sign a player who looks better with Premier League experience.
