EXCLUSIVE: Vertical acquired North American rights to Rosemead, a dramatic thriller inspired by true events that marks the feature directing debut of veteran cinematographer Eric Lin, and a star showcase for Lucy Liu. Vertical plans to release the film exclusively in theaters this December.
Rosemead centers on an ailing woman who uncovers a terrifying secret: her teenage son is consumed by violent impulses. As her health rapidly declines, she’s forced into a desperate struggle—how far will she go to stop what she fears he is becoming, and what is she willing to sacrifice to protect him? Set within the quiet tensions of a Chinese American household, the film explores the unraveling of a family pushed to the brink. Lin’s credits as cinematographer include The Exploding Girl, The Sound of Silence, and Hearts Beat Loud). Starring alongside Liu is breakout newcomer Lawrence Shou.
“We’re thrilled to share Rosemead with moviegoers this December —a film that’s as powerful as it is unforgettable. Lucy Liu gives a tour-de-force performance, delivering fierce intensity and emotional depth that will stay with audiences long after the final frame. Guided by Eric Lin’s bold direction, this gripping true crime drama doesn’t just keep you on the edge of your seat—it leaves a lasting impact.” said Peter Jarowey, Partner at Vertical.
“I’m excited Rosemead has found its home with Vertical and will soon reach a wider audience,” said Lin. “By exploring an immigrant family’s struggle with mental health and the stigma surrounding it against the backdrop of American gun violence, we hope the film sparks a deeper conversation about the urgent need for connection. I also can’t wait for the world to experience the extraordinary performances of our cast, from Lawrence who shines in his first feature film, and especially from Lucy who fearlessly pours herself completely into a role unlike anything she’s ever done before.”
The Rosemead script is by Marilyn Fu (The Copenhagen Test, The Honor List), who adapted an award-winning Los Angeles Times article by Frank Shyong. The film is produced by Mynette Louie (I Carry You With Me, Swallow), Andrew D Corkin (A Vigilante, Martha Marcy May Marlene), and Lucy Liu, and is a production by The Population and Untapped in association with MyVideo, Taiwan Mobile and L.A. Times Studios.
