Manchester United legend Dwight Yorke believes Ruben Amorim’s side can start to look towards a top-six spot after defeating Liverpool at Anfield.
The Red Devils won at Anfield for the first time since 2016 and Amorim won back-to-back Premier League games for the first time since taking over last season.
Amorim scored just 40 points in his first 35 Premier League games as Man United manager, but remains under pressure if he cannot maintain his current form.
And Yorke urged Man United and Amorim to build on their shock result on Merseyside, warning them not to “fall back into decline”.
Following the win against Man Utd, Yorke spoke exclusively to Football365 on behalf of Escapist Magazine: “It’s a huge win. I think a lot of people probably didn’t give United a chance to get the three points there, but as you know, Liverpool had lost three before the game and weren’t in their best form. It was Man Utd’s first win[at Anfield]in a while.”
“But it was by no means an easy task at Anfield. We know that we haven’t won there for 10 years either, so I think the chances of a result were very slim. But the players again put in a great performance, and not too many people We got a result that we didn’t have the chance to get. On top of that, winning two games in a row is something they haven’t been able to do before. So it’s a really big step forward and a lot of United fans are happy about it, including myself yesterday.

“Is this a season-changing result for United? You should hope so by beating one of their rivals. I know city derbies are huge, but there’s nothing like Liverpool. There’s a history between these two clubs and you would have thought it would happen.”
“If that doesn’t give us the incentive and extra confidence to go forward, I’m not really sure what will. So I hope this result and the win streak gives the players some inspiration that it can be done and gives them extra confidence for the rest of the campaign.”
“What they have to defend against is the fact that after winning against Liverpool everyone is coming after them and they have to react to that. So what they can’t allow to happen is to get these two good results, big results against Liverpool, and then fall back into the slump. So it’s going to be interesting.
“The eyes will be on them in the next game. And you don’t want to take one step forward and two steps back. I hope they don’t fall into that old cliché and get carried away and think that this is it and they can live with Liverpool’s result alone. They need to move on.”

Asked what his goals are for the rest of the season, Yorke added: “I think top four, that’s the normal norm. They have to get back into the top six. Top four would be an amazing comeback.
“Obviously no one, not even me, who is a United fan, expected that. Considering last season’s position, I’m happy with the top six, because it’s an upward trend. It’s going to be a difficult task. But what we’re seeing is that everyone can beat each other at any time and United can definitely achieve that. But they have to get back to a more stable base.”
“I always come back to just beating the teams around you, beating the teams you should be able to beat on paper. It’s when you’re losing to those teams that you get a little worried. We know we can perform like this in the past against Liverpool and City, and we have to roll up our sleeves and get results against lower teams.”
