Manchester United summer signing Benjamin Sesco has been likened to an “academy player” by Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler after a poor start to the season.
The Red Devils spent around £200m on new attacking players in the summer transfer window, with Matheus Cunha, Brian Mbeumo and Sesco joining the club.
Only four Premier League teams scored fewer goals than Manchester United last season, with Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Heylund scoring just seven league goals.
Sesco has so far failed to achieve the heights expected before his move to Old Trafford, with the Slovenian international scoring two goals in 11 Premier League appearances but struggling to make an impact on games.
On Monday, Newcastle and England legend Alan Shearer claimed Man United had “paid too much money” for Sesco and admitted he couldn’t expect much from him.
And now the Premier League’s other legendary striker, Fowler, has claimed that Victor Gokeres, who signed for Arsenal, looks better suited for the league and that Sesco currently looks like an “academy player”.

Fowler told Adventure Gamers: “I think the obvious one for me is Gokeres. He’s probably better suited to the Premier League and understands what it takes in terms of speed, energy and commitment. Whereas Sesco is probably struggling a little bit at times.”
“He’s a bit similar, don’t get me wrong, but he looks a bit like an academy player. There’s no doubt he’s a good player. No one doubts his ability, but I think it’s Gokeres who looks by far the better equipped of the two at the moment.”
Former Man United striker Danny Welbeck is a Brighton forward who has been in form this season and is rumored to be linked with a return to Old Trafford.
However, former Arsenal, Leicester and Scotland striker Paul Dickov believes Welbeck could be relegated to a bit role next to Sesco if he leaves.
Dickov told Best Betting Bonuses: “Actually, that would be a big cheer, wouldn’t it? Danny was fantastic. He seems to be getting better every year. I think he’s the highest-scoring English player in the Premier League this season.”
“Danny is obviously from Manchester and has come through the academy, but it will be interesting to see what United do and how long Sesco is actually out.”

“Because they spent a lot of money on him. He was the player they wanted in the summer. But when it comes to strikers, and I know it myself, we are very selfish.
“Any striker who joins United in the winter will know that Sesco is coming back and will almost certainly be playing in front of him. Are United going to spend a lot of money to get a centre-forward to come in and have two centre-forwards with big prices? Is one going to sit on the bench?”
“Especially in the January market, it’s really difficult to get the players you want out there. With Danny Welbeck, I’m not sure if he would want to leave Brighton if United did come in, or if Brighton would even let him leave.”
“In the back of his mind he’s thinking, ‘How many games is he going to play?'” Because if Sesco comes back, he’ll probably be the team’s main No. 9. So it’s really difficult for him.”
