Manchester United lender Marcus Rashford was accused of “self-destruction” after starting the XI in Barcelona as punishment for falling behind in the team meeting.
Man Utd lended Rashford to Aston Villa in January, but Unai Emery’s part was opposed to making the deal permanent.
By then it was already clear that his Old Trafford career had ended, at least under Reuben Amorim. In the summer, Barcelona intervened with an in-season loan and an option to buy for around £26 million.
After a start and start in Spain, Rashford scored twice in a 2-1 Champions League victory at Newcastle last week, appearing to have scored twice. However, instead of building up the best performance for Barca, he was dropped against Getafe from Hansi Flick’s next start XI due to his late arrival.

This is a mistake that Rashford made before. In 2022, Eric lost his sleep and benched him on the wolves to miss the meeting.
Now the same questions about his professionalism are chasing him in Spain. Paul Sholes has criticised Rashford, but former Watford captain Troy Deaney has accused him of repeatedly undermining his own career.
He told Talksport:
“He continues this, where he gets high and makes a self-declaration. Every time. You know the rules, you know what you should do in Barcelona.”

But Talksport’s European football expert Andy Brassell suggested that Rashford’s slip-ups would not be considered as bad in Spain as in the UK.
“The first instinct of many people is, ‘I can’t believe he did this, he was shot in the leg,’ but Hansiflic has always been consistent,” he explained.
“In the past, other major players have been dropped for this. Jules Kaunde and Rafina were dropped from XI late to the team meeting.
“Frick doesn’t hold this against Rashford, but he gave someone else the opportunity to replace him with his team.”
