In a competitive situation, Netflix has landed an untitled drama project starring and executive produced by Matthew McConaughey and Cole Hauser that comes from True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto and Skydance Sports, now part of Paramount, Deadline has confirmed.
Details are sketchy but the project is believed to be set in the world of football (college ot professional, it’s unclear) and it originated as a show about two brothers, played by McConaughey and Hauser, I hear.
The two actors have been friends for two decades (they starred together in the 1993 Dazed and Confused), and have been kicking around the idea over that time.
This marks the latest collaboration between McConaughey and Pizzolatto. The Oscar winner starred opposite Woody Harrelson in the first season of True Detective on HBO. McConaughey and Pizzolatto re-teamed for the straight-to-series FX drama Redeemer, which ultimately didn’t move forward, and recently reunited for a movie based on the ‘Mike Hammer’ book series.
McConaughey also has a brothers series with Harrelson at Apple TV+. The comedy also stems from the pair’s real-life friendship.
Hauser, known for playing Rip Wheeler in the hit Paramount Network series Yellowstone, is reprising his role in the upcoming spinoff, The Dutton Ranch (working title), starring alongside fellow Yellowstone alumna Kelly Reilly and Annette Bening.
McConaughey is repped by WME and Yorn Levine Barnes. Hauser is repped by IAG and Yorn Levine Barnes. Pizzolatto is repped by WME and Anonymous Content.
The news of the Netflix sale was first reported by THR.
