Scott McTominay is officially the 18th best player in world football. He is better than Jude Bellingham. He is better than Erling Haaland. He is better than Virgil van Dik. He is sure to be better than Manchester United players.
Perhaps Rio Ferdinand should look back at how after a season away from Old Trafford he is better than Declan Rice and only slightly worse than Harry Kane, who may have been a pairing to cure all United’s illnesses in the end.
Fair to Ferdinand, he was against United’s selling McTominai to Napoli, but his stable Eddie reasoning wasn’t aging much after Scott was named Serie A MVP in Antonio Conte’s debut season.
“I’m watching Scott Matminai, but not every player will be a star, a standout player,” Ferdinand said. “But to win the league, we need John O’Shea, Wes Brown, Darren Fletcher and more.
“They may not start every game, but they are huge, you need those players and most of them know the club’s DNA, especially those who have gone through the academy. There’s a lot to be said for that. It’s really not sitting with me.
“At McTominay, you know what you’re getting. He may not always be nine out of ten, but he’s always a solid seven out of ten, and sometimes he’s eight out of ten, and he’s a goal for you.”
However, critics recently fell into a trap that claimed many Manchester United stakeholders over the past decade or so, claiming that spending hundreds of millions on two extremely talented football players could solve the problem.
“To be honest, I’m sure if Man United had Harry Kane and Declan Rice in that window, they’d be somewhere else for now. It’s going back to the environment. These two are two top professionals, so they drive the environment.”

There’s no doubt that Kane and Rice will improve Manchester United, but Tottenham finished eighth last season despite 30 goals in that campaign. Rice led West Ham to the Conference League title, but finished in the 14th place Premier League. Unable to meet expectations due to the football club, or in this particular Ferdinand imagination case, there is only what two men can do at Manchester United.
And on the 27th, Mukutminai was placed between Rice and Kane 13th on the 27th, either of those potential saviors would have been like the influence of the Red Devils in Arsenal and Bayern Munich, respectively.
It’s likely that Old Trafford suffocated them just as the Mukutominai and several other fugitives enjoyed playing football on the meadows.
