Netflix has announced a 10-strong slate of Colombian originals including a doc series about soccer star James Rodríguez, a Susana and Elvira movie that will be released theatrically, and final seasons of Eva Lasting (La Primera Vez), Fake Profile (Perfil Falso) and Medusa.
The streamer has pushed heavily into Latin American programming with One Hundred Years of Solitude its biggest effort out of Colombia to date. With the concluding second season of that novel-to-series adaptation dropping soon, Netflix is diving deeper into the region.
There will be a Susana and Elvira movie marking the return of the iconic characters played by Manuela González and Mabel Moreno and made famous in a web series of the same name. The film will see them reunite and travel to Santa Marta to plan the wedding of the year. Production starts soon and the pic will play on Netflix after a theatrical run.
The as-yet-untitled Rodríguez project see Netflix return to familiar ground, commissioning a docuseries about a LatAm soccer superstar. The three-parter will, Netflix said, delve “into never-before-seen details of his life and professional career, from his time with iconic clubs like Real Madrid CF and FC Bayern Munich, to his recent experience at the 2024 Copa América, and the journey still ahead in the World Cup qualifiers.”
Elsewhere, Palace (Palacio) is a drama series based around the real-life storming of Colombia’s Palace of Justice in 1985 and its far-reaching consequences. “The series is an ambitious and emotionally charged exploration of the profound impact on the victims, the judicial system, and Colombian society as a whole,” Netflix said. Fugue State 1986 (Estado de Fuga) is also inspired by true events, this time a massacre perpetrated by Vietnam War veteran Campo Elías Delgado in Bogotá on December 4, 1986.
Other titles include Just Alice (Simplemente Alicia), which will follow protagonist Alicia. When forced her to decide between staying with Alejo, her hopeless romantic husband, or running off with Pablo, a charismatic community leader ready to leave the priesthood for her, she chooses both. That means maintaining two marriages, deceiving her husbands, families, friends and coworkers along the way.
Several shows have had their final seasons greenlit. Eva Lasting was Netflix’s first Colombian franchise and heads into a concluding fourth season. Drama series Medusa will wind up with a second season that drops next year and which will feature new cast members Juan Pablo Urrego and Karen Martínez. Meanwhile, Fake Profile will be three and out with a last-ever season.
