Man UTD legend Gary Neville claims that the Red Devils hierarchy will be “safe” with a victory in Sunderland, but Ruben Amorim is not “off-hook.”
Amorim’s side once again continued its completely inconsistent form by beating the Black Cat 2-0 at Old Trafford on Saturday and moving to the top half of the table.
Man Utd scored 3 and lost 3, pulling one game this season.
Their embarrassing League Cup exit to Grimsbytown in the first half of the campaign should also be considered when judging this term.
There have been reports claiming that Amorim will be judged on a 38-game “yardstick.” Amorim has scored just 37 points from 34 games since taking over from Erik Ten Hag at the beginning of last season.
And despite his victory over Sunderland on Saturday, Neville doubts he will be “kidded” by that victory in an away match against Liverpool at Anfield after an international break.

Neville said on his Sky Sports podcast:
“There are too many defeats. The records are too poor so I don’t think anyone will celebrate much at Manchester United tonight, but I think they’re relieved that there’s a victory that brings a bit of peace to the international break.
“Manchester United wins a strange game, but that’s not enough. I don’t think anyone will be kidnapped by the fact that Manchester United defeated Sunderland at home. The fact that pre-game presumably presupposes a problem in itself.”
Man UTD boss Amorim commented before the match against Sunderland that he was confident that criticism from the media was affecting their performance.
Amorim said: “My players, I assure you, they listen to all the opinions, and they’re putting it inside because we haven’t won the game. They have to believe in me.

In response to these comments, Neville added:
“I don’t remember Alan Hanson criticizing us when he broke us while saying we couldn’t win anything with our kids.
“I didn’t think I was criticized during my football career. I’m sorry I’m playing for Manchester United. It comes with the territory, you have to step up.
“They were hopeless in the system. If it’s not the system, if the players are the problem, the manager is the problem. If they’re losing a football match to the level they’re doing, everything is the problem.
“When I lost a football match, I didn’t blame anyone else. I’m sorry you came in when you lost a football match. I was accountable. Why would you blame others. I don’t have time to make excuses to blame others – that’s the worst thing you can do in life.
“I think they need to do their job and do their best and focus on winning soccer games. Everyone closes off by winning soccer games, and they haven’t won enough.”
