Written and directed by Rungano Nyoni, On Becoming a Guinea Fowl takes us to an empty road in the middle of the night, where Shula stumbles across the body of her uncle. As funeral proceedings begin around them, she and her cousins bring to light the buried secrets of their middle-class Zambian family. Opening in the Un Certain Regard section of last year’s Cannes Film Festival, the film stars Susan Chardy, Elizabeth Chisela, and Henry B.J. Phiri, and is produced by Ed Guiney, Andrew Lowe, and Tim Cole.
In the cult thriller Opus, starring Ayo Edebiri and John Malkovich, which premiered this year at Sundance, a young writer (Edebiri) is invited to the remote compound of a legendary pop star (Malkovich) who mysteriously disappeared 30 years ago. Surrounded by the star’s cult of sycophants and intoxicated journalists, she finds herself in the middle of his twisted plan. Written and directed by Mark Anthony Green, the film also stars Juliette Lewis, Murray Bartlett, Amber Midthunder, Stephanie Suganami, Young Mazino, and Tatanka Means. It’s produced by Collin Creighton, Brad Weston, Poppy Hanks, Jelani Johnson, Green, and Josh Bachove.
In genre-bender Death of a Unicorn, starring Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega, a father (Rudd) and daughter (Ortega) accidentally hit and kill a unicorn while en route to a weekend retreat, where his billionaire boss (Richard E. Grant) seeks to exploit the creature’s miraculous curative properties. Others in the cast include Will Poulter, Anthony Carrigan, Sunita Mani, Jessica Hynes, and Téa Leoni. Alex Scharfman directed from his own script and produced alongside Drew Houpt, Lucas Joaquin, Lars Knudsen, Tyler Campellone, Tim Headington, and Theresa Steele Page.
