Although Reneé Rapp has been on an unofficial acting hiatus while releasing her new album Bite Me, there’s at least one role that could tempt her back to the screen.
When asked what character she’d like to play as a potential Law & Order: Special Victims Unit guest star, the multi-hyphenate would not be content with a victim or killer-of-the-week role on the 26-season NBC procedural.
“Let me tell ya. I would be — Mariska Hargitay‘s lover. She would be gay, finally,” Rapp said on Today of the actress who stars as Captain Olivia Benson.
“There was an episode where they were talking about it and considering if she was gay,” she continued. “I feel like Christopher Meloni‘s character was like, ‘No, like, you’re a lesbian.’ And she was was like, ‘Um, no.’ Liar.”
Rapp imagined their characters would “somehow get tangled in an undercover kind of miss[ion], probably with a drug empire.”
In recent seasons of SVU and Meloni’s crossover Law & Order: Organized Crime, writers have teased longtime fans of the franchise with a near-kiss between Benson and her former partner Detective Elliot Stabler (Meloni).
Meloni recently teased an upcoming return to SVU by sharing some behind-the-scenes photos with Hargitay and co-star Dann Florek. He previously responded to a fan on social media that demanded Stabler “kiss [Benson] already,” writing: “I’m f—ing trying.”
Before leaving Sex Lives of College Girls in 2023 and starring last year’s Mean Girls movie musical, Rapp told Deadline’s sister publication Variety that her acting career is largely to support her music.
“[I thought], I can do music on the side, like, I can just hustle. And now I’ve just kept acting, because it keeps supporting the music,” said Rapp in 2022. “Acting was my way into tricking everyone that I warranted attention.”
