Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed an important update on Ibrahima’s future in Liverpool amid interest from Real Madrid.
Conate’s future beyond this season is questionable as he is one of the most valuable footballers who could become a free agent in 2026.
The centre-back sparkled alongside Virgil van Dik last season, and while struggling in the first two games of this campaign for Liverpool, he returned to face Arsenal in the final match of his side before an international break.
The impressive form at the 26-year-old has attracted interest from elsewhere as the Reds face repeated situations with Trent Alexander Arnold.
Speaking on Sunday, Romano revealed how Conate’s situation has “changed” over the past year amid “no agreement” between the defender and Liverpool.
“So, there’s still a conversation going on about a new deal between Liverpool, Conate and Liverpool, but there’s no agreement at this stage,” Romano said on his YouTube channel.

“That’s not easy. That story really had many different moments. It was so close in October and November last year, so the contract extension was very close orally and there was a final clause.
“The game was then changed around December and January. New discussions and no contracts on the contract. We spent the last six, eight and nine months without agreement between the parties.
“What about Real Madrid? Conate is certainly on Real Madrid’s list. Certainly he is one of their favorite players, and certainly he is one of the players he wants to bring in in 2026.
“But this only happens if Conate doesn’t extend his contract with Liverpool.”

Meanwhile, Telegraph reports that Liverpool has taken a more “practical” approach than Konate prior to his contract satisfaction.
The report explained:
“The dialogue is ongoing and the new contract is ready to be signed for a while. Liverpool doesn’t want to wait another 10 months for a solution, but it’s practical about the outcome.
“In that context, Guehi’s pursuit is set to move to Anfield this season with Bossman — must also be appreciated.”
The report also claims that “Liverpool is playing content and playing positive plans with Conate in both scenarios,” but that he is “confident” and “guehi will sign up for the idea of ’competing with partner Van Dijk’.”
