Kiev, Ukraine (AP) – Russia launched one of Ukraine’s biggest air attacks this year, launching 574 drones and 40 missiles overnight, the Ukrainian Air Force said Thursday.
He said the attacks primarily targeted the western part of the country. Authorities say the strike killed at least one person and injured 15 people.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andri Sibikh said Russia had attacked “a major American electronics manufacturer” in western Ukraine. He did not provide any further details.
The western part of Ukraine is far from the forefront of the country’s eastern and south battlefields. Much of the military aid provided by Ukraine’s western allies is believed to be transported and stored there.
Official figures say it was Russia’s third largest air attack this year.
The strike occurred during a new US-led effort to reach peace in Three Years War Following the invasion of Russian neighbors.
Ukrainian President Voldimi Zelensky condemned the attack, saying it was carried out “as if nothing had changed.”
Moscow showed no indications of pursuing meaningful negotiations to end the war, urging the international community to respond with stronger pressures, including harsher sanctions and tariffs.
Russia “wasted some cruise missiles against American businesses,” he said, saying it is a regular private company that produces domestic utilities such as coffee machines. “And that has also become a target for Russia. It’s very important.”
Previously, Zelenskyy said that Ukraine will hold intensive meetings to understand what kinds Security Guarantee Its allies are happy to offer after receiving signals that the United States supports a revitalization debate seeking an end to the war.
Details have been put forward between national security advisers and military officials, and Zelensky believes it will take a more clearer form within 10 days. He then expects he will be ready to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin for the first time in person. A full-scale invasion.
The talks could also be held in a trilateral format alongside US President Donald Trump, Zelensky said.
“We want to understand the security assurance architecture within 7-10 days, and based on that understanding, we aim to hold a trilateral meeting. That was my logic.” A trip to Washington with top European leaders.
“President Trump proposed a slightly different logic: a trilateral meeting through a bilateral meeting,” Zelensky said. “But we all agreed to continue working on security assurances in any case and establishing this approximate framework, just like Article 5.
Article 5 is NATO’s common defense guarantee, in which an attack on one member is considered an attack on all of them.
Zelenskyy has been debated with Switzerland, Austria and Türkiye as a possible venue for the conference.
Kyiv is not yet clear on what support they can expect from their allies. The coalition of over 30 countries, in principle, pledged to contribute to security assurances, but consultations ceased when the US remained vague about its role.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said he is working on a security agreement in Ukraine without Moscow’s involvement, according to state communications agency Ria Novosti.
“We cannot agree with the fact that it is currently proposed to resolve the collective security issue without the Russian Federation. This will not work. Although Russia has already explained that it is not exaggerating its interests, it will firmly and strictly guarantee its legitimate interests.”
The recent positive signal from Trump suggesting that the US supports security assurances “like Article 5” has reinvigorated these debates, Zelensky said, as Ukrainian hopes to join the European Union.
“Today, we have a positive signal from the US, President Trump and his team that they will be participants in Ukraine’s security guarantees, which opens up possibilities for other countries,” he added. “Currently, general staff from major countries are already beginning to talk about what they are ready.
Zelensky said Turkey is ready to provide security along the Black Sea after Trump appears to be open to the possibility of supporting security assurances in Ukraine.
Zelenskyy repeatedly said that Ukraine is ready to meet with Putin in person.
“And what happens if the Russians are not ready? The Europeans have raised the question. If the Russians are not ready, we want to see a strong response from the US,” he said.
Ukraine has previously expressed hope that the US will punish Russia with more sanctions if it does not show a serious will to end the war.
Zelenskyy spoke about him positively. Meeting with cards in an oval office Monday with top European leaders. He tried to convince Trump that the situation on the battlefield was as bad for Ukraine as Putin had portrayed.
Zelenskyy pointed to an error on the frontline map of the US, saying it showed Russia had more territory than it actually was.
“President Trump was interested in hearing the details. We talked a lot about Donbas, the East, about its importance. He said that if our troops withdraw from this territory and it was occupied, we showed Trump’s roads leading to the Ukrainian industrial centre in Dnipropetrobusk.
“We’ve noticed there are many important aspects here. If you’re simply talking about withdrawing from the east, you can’t do this,” Zelensky said.
