Manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink told Liverpool that a summer sale “never should have happened” but that Liverpool could not cope with it and instead signed players they did not need.
The Reds spent around £450m on domestic transfers in the summer. We needed to raise money to make it possible and we raised almost £200m in eight sales.
The highest price was £65.5 million from the sale of Luis Dias to Bayern Munich.
The Colombian winger already has 11 goals and five assists for the Bundesliga giants, so it looked like the sale would not work out.
Premier League legend Hasselbaink told Liverpool that the sale should never have taken place but essentially created a domino effect that has not been fixed.
He told Sky Sports: “Letting Diaz go should never have happened in my eyes, they should have bought a winger then.
“We’ve got (Ugo) Ekitike in the building. He’s been good and hit a first base hit on goal. (Alexander) Isak comes in and Ekitike goes on the bench. What does that do for Ekitike and what else does it bring to the team?”
“No matter what you say, that’s going to be a problem. On top of that, you have to find players to do the job.
“(Florian) Wirtz, don’t forget Wirtz there. We have to find a place.”

In fact, Liverpool spent around £450 million on six players, one of whom arrived on a free transfer, but no wingers.
Together, the summer signings have contributed 12 goals in all competitions, four fewer than Dias’ 16 goals for Bayern alone.
Wirtz is capable of playing as a left-winger, in fact probably closer to the position he played at Bayer Leverkusen before his £116m move than the one he plays at Liverpool.
Although he has played there from time to time, he hasn’t made the impact he would have liked and Isak is yet to hit his stride even after a huge £130m move.
Liverpool have recently been rumored to sign a winger in a bid to potentially make amends for losing a world-class player and failing to replace him, and could even raid Dias’ current team, Bayern, to sign him, with Michael Olisse and Serge Gnabry both recently linked.
