EXCLUSIVE: Ahead of the April 4th theatrical release of his latest film, The Luckiest Man in America, Samir Oliveros — writer, director, producer, and co-founder of filmmaking collective Plenty Good — has signed with Cinetic Media for management.
A Colombia-born, U.S.-based talent who has leveraged partnerships at home in Latin America to create film and television for global audiences, Olivero’s Luckiest Man is a starry Colombia-based production that sold to IFC Films and Sapan Studio after premiering at TIFF 2024, in one of the few deals of the festival. The stranger-than-fiction story, based on true events, follows an unemployed ice cream truck driver who, in 1984, drives from Ohio to California to become a contestant on the popular game show Press Your Luck and goes on an unprecedented winning streak, all while keeping a big secret.
The project features a stacked cast led by Paul Walter Hauser, which also includes David Strathairn, Shamier Anderson, Walton Goggins, Maisie Williams, Haley Bennett, and Johnny Knoxville. Oliveros directed from his script written with Maggie Briggs, with Amanda Freedman of Plenty Good producing. Executive producers include Juan de Dios Larraín, Pablo Larraín, and Andrew Hevia of Fabula, Hauser, Ron Black, Sara McFarlane, Damiano Tucci, Tiziano Tucci, Sophia Banks, Divya Shahani, Arun Thapar, Roger Lolly, Juan Pablo Solano, Simón Beltrán and Josh Sapan. Protagonist Pictures is handling sales in additional territories.
Born and raised in Bogotá, Oliveros’ first feature Bad Lucky Goat premiered at SXSW in 2017 and went on to play over 70 festivals including BFI London and TIFF Next Wave. His AFI thesis, Cactus Blossom, was awarded a DGA Jury Prize. Additionally, Oliveros is a partner and co-founder of the aforementioned Plenty Good alongside Tomás Gómez Bustillo, Ciro Apicella, RJ Glass, Gewan Brown and Amanda Freedman. The filmmaker collective and independent production company is focused on nurturing new and emerging talent globally.
“We gravitate towards movies that don’t behave: whether it’s an unruly character, an unconventional structure, or irreverent style, our movies challenge what’s expected,” explained Oliveros and Freedman in a joint statement.
As part of his role as co-founder, Oliveros served as an executive producer on Chronicles of a Wandering Saint, which premiered at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival, won the Adam Yauch Hörnblowér Award, and was nominated for three Independent Spirit Awards. Pic was helmed by Plenty Good partner Bustillo and produced by Brown and Freedman.
Cinetic Media reps top filmmakers including Richard Linklater, David Gordon Green, Todd Haynes, Aaron Schimberg & Vanessa McDonnell, Matthew Rankin, Killer Films, World of Wonder, Lana Wilson, Betsy West & Julie Cohen, Yance Ford, Matthew Heineman, Petra Costa, and Kevin Macdonald, to name just a few.
The company will represent Oliveros across all media and he will continue to be represented by CAA.
