WASHINGTON (AP) – For many dedicated sports fans, catching up to their favorite team has become a juggling act.
Activate the NFL package in August, unsubscribe after the Super Bowl and before the NBA playoffs begin, and subscribe to the NBA services. It’s the only way to win a local baseball team, so I keep paying cable bills in a gross mood. Subscribe to ESPN’s new consumer streaming service for college football.
This patchwork of expensive subscriptions, cable packages and password sharing is common to many sports fans. Associated Press-NORC Civil Service Research Centerand it makes it visible on multiple platforms at a cost that no one would like.
According to the vote, around four in ten people who use “very” or “very” closely “with” cable or satellite TV and sports-only streaming platforms “very” and about two in ten people who follow sports “a little” in close tune.
For many fans, especially those who want to monitor out-of-market teams and closely follow regular season play, there is no other option. Creating a more seamless form of live sports distribution means essentially rebuilding the cable bundles that many have dumped over the last few years.
New services are emerging – Recently, ESPN’s latest consumer streaming servicedebuted in August, but for the most part, sports fans are stuck on multiple platforms and subscriptions. Sometimes, instead, they choose to stop looking at their favorite sports or teams regularly.
Streaming, cable, or both
According to the vote, the people who are most satisfied with the availability of sporting events are those who use multiple platforms.
Approximately six in ten adults reporting using cable and streaming services say they are “somewhat” or “very” happy with the availability of the sporting events they want to watch.
John Thor, 45, was a relatively early cord cutter, and in 2020 he removed his DirectV cable subscription to support the company’s cheap streaming service. So those who manage the pipeline supply and manufacturing operations in Houston say they appreciate the flexibility to stream across multiple devices.
However, he sometimes struggles with video quality and relies on other streaming services (Disney+ with ESPN and Hulu integration or Paramount Plus).
And although he has access to almost every local Houston Texans game, he sometimes struggles to see the local NBA and MLB franchises.
“I say I’m happy. I don’t say I’m happy (so that sports are available).” “I’m not an avid watcher of regular season games, but it’s a kind of feedback loop. I’m not a eager watcher because there’s no availability of local games. The fact that you have to pay $15 or $16 a month for a local sports network package is a surprise to you to become an active watcher.”
Serious sports fans are more likely to use sports-only streaming platforms from the start. Those following sports are closely reporting the usage of sports-only streaming platforms, such as “very” or “very” MLB.TV, NFL Sunday Tickets, and NBA League Pass. Approximately six in ten people who follow sports “very” or “very” closely use sports-only streaming platforms. Few non-fans use these platforms.
Sports fans are also unlikely to be cord cutters, an AP-NORC poll found. Those who follow the sport closely “very” or “very” are likely to say they are using cable or satellite television in particular, with about six in ten people saying they use traditional television options, such as cable or satellite. Approximately 40% of people following sports are saying the same thing in detail, as about a third of people who don’t follow sports closely.

Polls found that sports fans are more likely to cancel through streaming services than non-sports fans.
Around six in ten sports fans say they have subscribed to streaming services for certain shows or sports seasons over the past year, but about half have canceled the streaming services after completing a specific show or sports season.
It is especially likely that those who follow the “very” or “very” sports will say they have been subscribed or cancelled due to a particular show or season. This applies to people who use sports streaming platforms. According to polls, about two-thirds of people who currently use sports streaming platforms subscribe to streaming services for a particular show or season, compared to about a third of people who don’t use these platforms.
Randy Alvarez, 35, said she could get some of what she wants to watch on YouTube TV, an online alternative to television. He removed the cable in 2022 and didn’t miss it, but he described his approach as “hodgepodge” for streaming, premium channels and password sharing.
Los Angeles-based educators and administrators follow two out-of-market teams with ties to the Bay Area. Las Vegas Raiders ( Previously in Auckland ) And the Golden State Warriors. But without adding NFL Sunday tickets and NBA league passes, he said he was too expensive, but he’s putting together what he gets from online streams and what’s broadcast nationwide.
Sometimes, that means he has no luck. Four-time NBA Champion WarriorsAlvarez said, at least there will be games on TNT and ABC. Raiders? good, Not so much.
Alvarez is not alone with his approach. Almost half of sports fans say that I shared my password Or they shared their passwords compared to 30% of people who follow sports that say they don’t have much or none.
Most are dissatisfied with the cost
One area most sports fans agree: it is expensive.
At least about half of those following “somewhat” sports closely say they’re dissatisfied with the cost of the streaming and cable services they use, and about a quarter weren’t satisfied or unhappy.
