After surpassing $331M to become the United States’ highest-grossing Man of Steel pic, James Gunn‘s Superman is soaring to digital in time for Peacemaker fans to catch up ahead of Season 2.
Following its premiere in theaters last month, Superman‘s North American digital release is set for Friday, Aug. 15, ahead of Peacemaker‘s Friday, Aug. 22 return to HBO Max. The DC Studios movie then becomes available Sept. 23 on 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD.
Gunn said of the quick jump to digital, “Well, it’s very complicated, but the truth is it is because of Peacemaker. I originally thought Peacemaker was going to be coming out next month. There was a lot of things that are beyond our control, so that Peacemaker is coming out now, and, at the end of the day, I wanted everyone to be able to see Superman that wanted to, even those people who couldn’t get to a theater before Peacemaker. And that’s really the reason for it.”
Also coming soon to the digital version will be special features including a gag reel, deleted scenes and a director’s commentary from Gunn, all of which will be automatically added for customers who have already purchased the movie on digital.
The physical release will also include the featurettes ‘Adventures in Making Superman‘, ‘Lex Luthor: The Mind of a Master Villain’, ‘Paws to Pixels: Krypto is Born’, ‘The Justice Gang’, ‘A New Era: DC Takes Off’ and more.
After taking over DC Studios with Safran in 2022, Superman marks the first entry in Gunn’s new DCU franchise, which begins with the ‘Gods and Monsters’ phase.
Now in theaters, Superman stars David Corenswet in the titular role. In addition to Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, the cast also includes Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor and María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, as well as Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, Sean Gunn, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Isabel Merced and Nathan Fillion as some familiar DC faces.
