Stranger Things: The First Shadow began stalking Broadway last week, selling out the first two previews of its engagement at the Marquis, grossing $433,725 for the pair of performances. Opening night is April 22. Look to see the coming weeks put the effects-heavy show into the realm of some other recent big grossing shows.
The Picture of Dorian Gray, starring Sarah Snook, opened to strong reviews last week, taking $1,018,514 for two previews and four regular performances, filling all seats at the Music Box.
Boop! The Musical is in previews at the Broadhurst, and grossed $543,892 for seven previews, with attendance at a strong 92% of capacity. Opening night is April 5.
And then of course there were the three heavy (and pricey) hitters among the recent arrivals:
- Good Night, And Good Luck, starring George Clooney and opening April 3 at the Winter Garden, sold out its seven previews last week, grossing $3,282,682, with an average ticket price of $298.83 and a top premium ticket of $775;
- Othello, starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal, sold out its first full week of post-opening performances, grossing a hefty $3,160,085 on an average ticket price of $378.73, top premium $897;
- Glengarry Glen Ross sold out its final week of previews (it officially opened last night), grossing $2,100,663, and selling out the Palace with an average ticket of $200 and top premium of $799.
Some other notable spring arrivals:
- The Last Five Years, starring Adrienne Warren and Nick Jonas, filled 99% of seats at the Hudson, grossing $841,682 for seven previews. Opening night is April 6;
- Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends, starring Bernadette Peters and Lea Salonga began previews at the Manhattan Theatre Club’s Friedman, grossing $637,936 for seven performances with attendance at near-capacity;
- Smash, the musical based on the cult-TV show of the same name, filled 87% of seats for seven previews at the Imperial, with a gross of $965,857;
- John Proctor Is The Villain, starring Sadie Sink, filled all seats for seven previews at the Booth, grossing $379,958; opening night is April 14;
- Floyd Collins, the Adam Guettel-Tina Landau musical, began previews at non-prof Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont, selling out three previews for a gross of $350,137. Opening night is April 21.
In all, Broadway’s 36 productions grossed $43,839,272 for the week ending March 30, a jump of 6% over the previous week and up 18% over last year at this time. Last week’s attendance was 311,399, up 4% over the previous week and 14% over last season.
About 95% of all available Broadway seats were filled, with an overall average ticket price of $140.78.
Season to date, Broadway, in the 45th week of the 2024-25 season, has grossed $1,530,109,829, up about 19% over last year at this time, with total attendance of 11,958,003 up 17%.
