Reports say the Liverpool star has “one foot” from the Premier League giants, but there is a “surprising alternative” for Giovanni Leoni.
Liverpool is having problems at centre-back as they lack options without signing Leoni, who suffers an ACL injury and misses the rest of this season.
Leoni’s injury left Virgil van Dik, Ibrahima Conate and Joe Gomez and head coach Arn Slot as his only fit and natural centre back after Liverpool failed to sign Crystal Palace captain Mark Guech at the deadline.
Konate and Gomez also have injuries issues, so Liverpool are looking for a left field solution if it breaks down in the coming weeks/months.
Nevertheless, Gomez, who has been signed until 2027, has been deeply tied to exit in recent months, with reports showing that if Liverpool signed Guech he left in the summer.

The 28-year-old Gomez has been an important utility player for Liverpool in recent years, but has fallen into the pecking order under the slots, and Guehi’s potential arrival at the 2026 free transfer could further limit his opportunity.
In the summer, Gomez attracted interest from AC Milan, with Spanish outlet Fishajes claiming that he remains a “priority” for the Serie A Giants while he has “one foot” through the door and is not part of the slot plan.
It will be added to the report:
“Joe Gomez’s name is once again strongly spoken in Italy. The Liverpool defender, relegated to a supportive role at Anfield, is the preferred target for AC Milan in the upcoming transfer window.
‘ Liverpool held him in the summer, frustrating his frustrating negotiations with Milan. Without a reliable exchange, Red was forced to pull the plug at the last minute. However, things haven’t changed and players’ patience is beginning to fade. ”

Journalist Pete O’Rourke explained to Football Insider why midfielder Wataru End is being “explored” as a “surprise alternative” for Leoni.
He states:
“Liverpool is lacking in centre-back options, and there is no way to escape.
“So now they have Van Dik, Conate, Gomez and perhaps End down as a kind of cover centre-back, which is a surprise considering he played his entire career in the middle.
“They probably need more coverage at centreback, especially if they plan on competing for honors in all aspects this year.
“If they were injured further, they could have found themselves in a really difficult position.”
