Tottenham legend Teddy Sheringham feels Chelsea’s summer transfer decision was “very strange” and “immediately regretted”.
Chelsea performed very well in the summer window. They signed 10 players (nine on permanent transfers), sold 14, sent seven on loan and sent two on free transfers.
The most intriguing of the loan exits was Nicholas Jackson. Jackson was due to go to Bayern Munich before Liam Delap was injured, so it means Jackson, who was already in Munich to finalize the deal, has been recalled.
However, he and his agent did not want to return and the striker ultimately made the move to the German giants as Chelsea recalled Marc Giu from loan as cover for the striker.
Jackson has made six appearances for Bayern so far, scoring one goal and providing one assist, both in the same Champions League game.
Tottenham legend Sheringham feels it was a strange request to allow Jackson to leave.
He said: “I think Chelsea made a very strange decision to loan Nicholas Jackson to Bayern Munich.
“Top clubs need a centre-forward who is the heart of the team, someone who can lead the line and understand what the job is expected of him.
“Jackson has been at the club for two years, has gained experience and improved his scoring record.
“I was very surprised to see him leave and see him being dumped like Enzo Maresca.
“He is a player who knows Maresca’s system very well and could have helped Joao Pedro integrate into the team. We now have Pedro and Delap, both of whom are still learning the new system and one is injured.
“The timing of Delap’s injury was unfortunate, but I think it showed that Chelsea instantly regretted their decision to let Jackson go, because they tried to bring him back and he said no, which I thought was fair enough.”

No one Chelsea player has outperformed the other players in front of goal this season. Midfielders Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandes lead the Premier League with three each, while Pedro has two.
However, the Blues have scored 13 goals in the league, only Arsenal and Manchester City have more.
As such, they don’t need a goal-producing star striker at the moment, but if they do, they could outperform similar teams.
However, Jackson scored 10 of his 30 points last season, but was by no means the league’s top scorer with 14 points.
