Washington (AP) – President Donald Trump Emergency orders It is set to expire Wednesday after council failed to extend it beyond the country’s capital that federated police and launched a surge in law enforcement in the city.
But the serious Democratic district clashes over Republicans and their autonomy only intensifies, and House committees have begun to discuss 13 bills that will, if approved, take more control over the city.
Mayor Muriel Bowser’s office said the order will expire in the middle of the night. The National Guard and several other federal agencies will continue to roll out, and it is not clear when that will end.
Trump’s Washington police takeover and Wednesday’s discussion in the House underscores how the capital coordinated with the federal government and how much the city’s ability to govern is seen in federal decisions.
Trump’s order has made local police federal government
For the past 30 days, the city’s local metropolitan police station has been under the president’s control to use in what he described as a crime fight initiative.
Local police joined hundreds of federal law enforcement officers and agents in sweeps and roundups and other police operations. Approximately 2,000 members of the National Guard DC and seven states were also part of a surge in law enforcement.
Crime has decreased Figures from the White House and local police departments show that during the surge, but data also show crime has fallen to the federal takeover.
Congress is satisfied Steps taken by Bowser To ensure continued cooperation with the city, the decision was made not to extend the emergency and brought police back to district control.
But Bowser, who worked with Trump to walk the tightrope to protect city home rules, must pivot to the city’s legislature. The next business order is a series of proposals discussed on Wednesday by the House Committee on Surveillance and Government Reform.
Part of the House bill focuses on law enforcement
Bill 13 calls for the repeal or change of the DC Act. Several provisions remove district elected attorney generals. I asked the judge to intervene. With the acquisition. Others allow the president to appoint someone to that position.
There is also a move to lower the age of juveniles to challenge 16-14 for certain crimes, as well as to change the bail system and remove methods that councils can use to extend emergency bills.
Even if the bill passes the committee and the House of Representatives, the question is whether they can pass the Filibuster Proof Senate. DC activists have already begun lobbying Senate Democrats.
Bowser urged House Oversight Committee leaders to reject these proposals.
She argued that the bill, sponsored by Rep. Paul Gozard, a member of the Conservative House Freedom Caucus, would “have less efficient, more competitive and more responsive in the district.” She said she looks forward to working with the committee to build a “productive partnership” that “respects the will of DC residents and respects the principles of home rules.”
Republican Rep. Ron Estes and several Republican colleagues said they wanted their members to feel safe visiting the capital. Recent Murder I was an intern who worked in Estes’ office. “We want to secure a capital that Americans are proud of,” Estes said.
Members of the House Republican Research Committee held a September 2nd press conference, celebrating Trump’s intervention and supporting codifying his executive order.
“The Congress has clear constitutional authority over DC and we will not hesitate to use it to continue making DC safe and great again,” said Rep. August Pfluger, chairman of that committee.
The mayor of DC says the bill challenges city autonomy.
Bowser said the bill is a humiliation against city autonomy and “laws affecting districts should be enacted by districts.”
The district is granted autonomy through a limited housing regulations agreement passed in 1973, but federal political leaders maintain critical control over local operations, including approval of budgets and laws passed by the DC Council.
It’s in Bowser The nation repeatedly saida non-starter for Republicans in Congress is the only solution.
