The former Chelsea defender believes England manager Thomas Tuchel could “take over” at Manchester United if Ruben Amorim is sacked.
Manchester United manager Amorim bought time with a 2-0 win over Sunderland before the international break, but remains under serious pressure.
The Red Devils are 10th in the Premier League after seven games, but club co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe said this week that Amorim bizarrely has three years to prove he is a “great coach” at Old Trafford.
“The press, sometimes I don’t understand,” Ratcliffe said. “They want overnight success. They think it’s a light switch. You flip the switch and tomorrow everything will fall apart. You can’t run a club like Manchester United with an expedient response to some journalist yelling at you every week.”
Ratcliffe added: “He hasn’t had his best season. Ruben has three years to prove he’s a great manager and that’s what I need to do.”

A number of names have been mentioned to join Manchester United if Amorim were to leave, with former Chelsea player Scott Minto putting England manager Tuchel on the list.
Tuchel discussed a move to Man United last summer, but Ratcliffe decided to keep Erik ten Hag as manager, with the German replacing Gareth Southgate after England failed to win Euro 2024.
Minto told talkSPORT that Amorim will leave Manchester United at the end of 2025/26 and that Tuchel is ready to “take over”.
“Personally, I think coach Amorim will be there until the end of the season, and personally I think Thomas Tuchel will be his successor. We’ll see what happens and whether it happens or not,” Minto said.
After Tuchel went on a rant about not enjoying being England manager, Minto added: “Going back to Man United, I think what Sir Jim said was one of those games where he didn’t support the manager 100 per cent at first. That said a lot to me, but then he said this about the three years.
“But if Manchester United continue like this he won’t get three years.”
Tuchel’s England defeated Wales 3-0 in a friendly on Thursday night, but the Germans were hoping for more from their Wembley supporters.
And you know, we’re with him. If his mission is to “bring football home”, England fans could at least play their part from the stands.
Matt Stead said:
In almost eight years, the closest Gareth Southgate has come to criticizing an England supporter was his deplorable response to Jordan Henderson’s backlash…
If he is expected to perform at the World Cup as England manager, it is natural that he would want something in return from the deal.
It didn’t suddenly appear out of nowhere. Before the game against Wales, manager Tuchel expressed his desire to change the atmosphere surrounding England, which has been chaotic and chaotic since Euro 2024.
It was a deal that most fans probably didn’t know they were signing, but Tuchel was bound to be frustrated when he and his players held up admirably in the early stages against a lackluster response. It doesn’t hurt that England now have a manager willing to shout about it in their eternal pursuit of tournament perfection.
