WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States on Thursday captured survivors after attacking a suspected drug-laden ship in the Caribbean, the first since President Donald Trump launched deadly attacks in the region this summer, according to a defense official and another person familiar with the matter.
The public acknowledged the attack Friday on condition of anonymity because President Donald Trump’s administration has not yet acknowledged the attack. This is believed to be at least the sixth time since Augus, and the first time that a survivor has been taken into custody by the U.S. military. It was not immediately clear what would be done with the individual.
Thursday’s attack brings the death toll from the Trump administration’s military operations against vessels in the region to at least 28.
Survivors of the attack now face an uncertain future and legal situation, including questions about whether they will be considered prisoners of war or defendants in criminal cases.
