Veteran TV Publicist Was 76

Paul Nichols, a publicist who got his start in television working at The Mike Douglas Show in Philadelphia and later had stints at Group W, All American Television, Sony Pictures Television and Lippin Group, has died. He was 76.

His March 14 death at his home in Weatherford, Texas, was announced by family.

Born on March 22, 1948 in Wilmington, Delaware, Nichols graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 1970 with a degree in broadcast journalism. He launched his broadcast career working as a DJ at a local AM radio station in State College, Pennsylvania, later moving to Philadelphia, where he DJ’d at an FM radio station.

In Philadelphia, he moved over to television to work as a publicist at The Mike Douglas Show, later moving to California to work for Douglas’ successor, the actor and singer John Davidson.

During his years at the Lippin Group, Nichols helped launch Baywatch into first-run syndication and assisted in the branding of what would become one of the most successful syndie TV series.

Nichols lived in L.A.’s Marina del Rey area for years before moving with wife Linda to Texas upon their retirement. She died March 2 at 77. They had been married since 1993

Paul Nichols is survived by his brother Robert and sister-in-law Denise, nephews Steve and James and niece Caitlin and four great-nieces.
