EXCLUSIVE: After what it described as a “six-figure pre-empt,” Noho Film & Television has won the rights to adapt Zac Hammett’s queer campus romance See You At The Finish Line for TV.
See You At The Finish Line follows Lucas, a sharp-witted, working-class rower, and George, an American golden-boy captain, whose uneasy alliance evolves into a tender but combustible love story against the backdrop of the famous boat race between Oxford and Cambridge universities.
The book launched earlier this year and has been compared in scope and theme to Red, White & Royal Blue, Prime Video’s romcom about a love affair between the son of the President of the U.S. and a British Prince.
Hammett is a highly-rated young scribe who was part of the writing room for Disney+’s Rivals. His second rom com novel, International Relations, pitched as a queer take on The Proposal, is set to be published next year.
Noho won out after a “six-figure pre-empt,” the indie said, and it will now begin putting together a creative team. The company makes Channel 4 comedy The Windsors and is run by Robert Wulff-Cochrane and Camilla Campbell, whose past credits include Misfits and This is England 86 from their time running the Channel 4 drama department.
“From the moment we picked up Zac’s perfectly crafted novel, we realised it was something special,” said Wulff-Cochrane and Campbell. “A love story between two outsiders in a high-stakes world, Zac’s story gives us the agony of love, the cliff-edge of failure, as well as stunning locations, and men in Lycra.”
Hammett added: “From my first meeting with Robert and Camilla, their passion for the story was infectious and I knew they were the ideal team to entrust with my beloved characters. I can’t wait to go on this journey together and want to offer endless thanks to my agent Cynthia for orchestrating the perfect meet-cute.”
Hammett is repped by Ariele Fredman and Laurie-Maude Chenard in the U.S. and Jess Molloy and Annabel White in the UK. Cynthia Okoye represents him for film and TV work.
