Test skippers Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumra cut Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shureyas Ayer were the biggest omissions from a 15-man team.
Defending Champions India has selected top-order Shubmangill and pace spearhead Jasplit Bumura for the Twenty20 team in the UAE next month’s Asian Cup.
However, openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Middle Order Batter Shrayas Iyer did not make Tuesday’s cuts from the 15 members led by Suryakumar Yadav.
India’s test captain Gill has not played T20 International since last July when he was an agent for Suryakumar on his tour in Sri Lanka.
“We started a new cycle from there,” said Suryakumar, who took over the T20 Captaincy from Rohit Sharma after India won the 20 Over World Cup title last year.
“After that, he was busy with all the Test series and had no chance to play T20 as he was busy playing Test cricket and the Champions Trophy,” Suryakumar told reporters.
“So he’s on the team and we’re happy to have him.”
India also included Bumrah. Bumra’s recent workloads have been a major concern for team think tanks, playing him in three of the five UK tests in June and July.
There is no space for high swallows
India was unable to accommodate Jaiswal as Gill, Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson have three opening options.
“Again, it’s a shame again when it comes to Yashasvi,” said Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar.
“There is Abhishek Sharma, what he did last year or so, and he can bowl a little bit, and we will give you that option if you want.
“It was something that one of these guys missed. Yashasvi has to wait for his chance.”
Samson and Jitesh Sharma are two wicket keepers on the side, including left arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav.
India will launch a Group A campaign against hosts in the UAE in Dubai before meeting the Archbishop of Pakistan at the same venue four days later.
The Asian Cup 2025 will begin on September 9th.
