Test Captain Gill will take over the 50-over leadership role ahead of the ODI series with Australia.
Released on October 4, 2025
Rohit Sharma has been replaced by Shubman Gill as India’s one-day international (ODI) men’s captain, the country’s cricket committee says.
Rohit was India’s all-format captain until June 2024 and is included in the 15-man team of the ODI series against Australia, along with star batter Virat Kohli, the trustee of India’s Cricket (BCCI) in a statement on Saturday.
Gill, who took over as test captain after Rohit’s retirement from the May format, will take over the role ahead of the ODI series in Australia from October 19th.
Rohit led India in ODI format at the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in February and March, with his team winning the title in the final against New Zealand in Dubai.
The 38-year-old led India to his second ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title in Barbados in 2024, and later announced his retirement from the 20-over format along with Kohli.
Indian cricket stubborns are cutting boots in the longest form of the game, following the 2024-25 Australian Test Tour.
Kohli, who turned 37 in November, also retired from Test cricket.
Suryakumar Yadav replaced Rohit in July with the T20 International Captain and won India’s victory at the T20 Asia Cup 2025.
There was no surprise to the Indian team for the five-match T20I series against Australia.
