Chris Pratt has signed to re-voice Garfield in Alcon Entertainment’s animated theatrical motion picture sequel to The Garfield Movie, based on the iconic comic strip Garfield with Sony Pictures distributing.
The signing was announced by Alcon co-founders and co-CEO’s Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson.
The Garfield Movie was released in May 2024 and grossed over $260 million worldwide. Sony Pictures distributed the animated film globally (excluding China).
Alcon acquired the rights from the creator of the Garfield comic strip and brand, Jim Davis, who will serve as an Executive Producer on the sequel with Bridget McMeel from Amuse.
John Cohen (The Garfield Movie, Despicable Me, Angry Birds) and Steven P. Wegner will serve as producers along with Alcon principals Kosove and Johnson. Pratt will also serve in a producer role on the film.
Namit Malhotra’s production company Prime Focus Studios will co-produce the film alongside Alcon Entertainment, with Namit Malhotra also serving as a producer. DNEG Animation is back onboard as animation partner, following the success of the studio’s work on the first movie.
Producers are currently in talks with potential writers and directors and additional casting will be announced shortly.
Pratt recently starred in Walt Disney Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and had the lead voice role in the original Garfield movie. He will also be starring in Mercy to be released by Amazon MGM and Way Of The Warrior Kid from Apple and Skydance.
Created by cartoonist Jim Davis, the Garfield comic strip debuted in June 1978 and follows the cynical and lazy orange cat and his interactions with his owner, Jon Arbuckle, and fellow pet Odie, the lovable dog.
Garfield originally appeared in 41 newspapers, but its success and immediate popularity made it one of the fastest growing comic strips of all time, ultimately appearing in 2,580 newspapers and journals, with an estimated readership of 260 million. Garfield currently holds the record for being the most widely syndicated comic strip in the world.
Pratt is repped by UTA, Rise Management, and Sloane, Offer, Weber and Dern. Jeannette Hill, Executive Vice President of Business and Legal Affairs at Alcon Entertainment, negotiated the deal on the company’s behalf.
