Henry Golding shared an update on the upcoming Max and Warner Bros. Crazy Rich Asians TV series from Adele Lim, Jon M. Chu, and Kevin Kwan.
“Everybody’s excited,” Golding shared on the Today Show this morning.
“I was with Nora, Awkwafina, who is a fellow New Yorker, the other night, and we were discussing it. We had Adele Lim come over and visit me and Gemma [Chan] in London not too long ago to discuss where we’re heading. We have a larger, longer-running format because we’re doing a series. We have so much runway to really share the world you kind of got a glimpse of in Crazy Rich. We’re really excited to show more,” he added.
Although Golding didn’t flat-out confirm he is officially on board, it sounds like many key players are keen to explore their characters and their stories further on the small screen.
As Deadline revealed in February, a development room was open for business led by Lim, who will serve as executive producer, writer, and showrunner. Chu, who directed the film, and Kevin Kwan, who authored the novel of the same name that inspired the film, serve as executive producers.
At the time of our original announcement, we noted unofficial conversations with the original cast about possibly returning had been underway; however, there was no creative direction for the series, so it would be too early to speculate on the storyline.
Max confirmed the series will be a drama based on the Kwan book series, which also includes the titles China Rich Girlfriend, Rich People Problems, and Lies and Weddings.
Crazy Rich Asians (book and film) follows Chinese-American Rachel (Constance Wu) and her fiancé Nick’s (Henry Golding) love story as they travel to visit his family and friends in his native Singapore. There are surprises in store for Rachel to discover before she walks down the aisle—including the fact that Nick’s family is extremely rich.
The film’s ensemble cast also includes Michelle Yeoh, Harry Shum Jr, Nico Santos, Ronny Chieng, Jimmy O. Yang, Ken Jeong, and Lisa Lu, among others.
Golding’s schedule has gotten even busier since Crazy Rich Asians. Up next, he will star in the Prime Video film, Another Simple Favor, premiering on May 1, and The Old Guard 2, premiering on Netflix on July 2, working opposite Charlize Theron and Uma Thurman. On the TV front, he will star in Hulu’s Nine Perfect Strangers, premiering May 21.
