Ravichandran Ashwin is the fifth highest wicket taker in the IPL and second on India’s list of test wickets.
Spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has ended his Indian Premier League (IPL) career, but he says he can compete in other franchise crickets around the world.
The 38-year-old began and finished his IPL career with his home team Chennai Super Kings, during which he represented Rising Pune Super Giants, Delhi Capitals, Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab.
“They say that every ending will give a fresh start. My time as an IPL cricketer is approaching today, but my time as an explorer of games across different leagues starts today,” the 38-year-old posted on X on Wednesday.
“I look forward to enjoying what’s in front of me and making the most of it,” he added.
The Indian Cricket Committee (BCCI) does not allow current players of Indian international or domestic cricket to appear in overseas leagues.
Ashwin is the fifth-highest wicket taker in the IPL, with an economic rate of 7.2 with 187 wickets from 221 games.
The offspinner left international cricket in December 2024, winning 537 Test wickets, 156 one day international wickets and 72 wickets at the T20 International.
Only Anil Kumble’s 619 wickets stood before Ashwin in Indian Test cricket.
Ashwin made his Test debut against the West Indies in 2011, and was named a match player with a 9-128 match figure throughout the match.
The Chennai-born bowling all-rounder continued to win eight wicket matches in the 8th century, reaching the 6th century in 106 Tests.
The final test was Australia’s second match on the 5 Test Tour, resulting in a 3-1 series defeat in India. Ashwin’s last T20 International was in November 2022.
