‘Mr Bates Vs The Post Office’ Wins BAFTA Special Award
Mr Bates vs the Post Office, the breakout ITV hit that generated news headlines for weeks, has won a BAFTA Television Special Award . The Toby Jones-starring series will take home the gong at the TV ceremony in 10 days’ time. Airing early last year on ITV, the show told the story of the battle for justice after the post office scandal, which saw hundreds of subpostmasters falsely accused of illegality and financial shortfalls caused by faulty IT software. They have since been pardoned and compensation sped up. Last year’s special award went to host Lorraine Kelly. “TV has a proud tradition of covering important stories like this through drama, and bringing them to the widest audiences,” said ITV content boss Kevin Lygo. “We all knew this was an important story that needed to be told, but we never could have anticipated the scale of what came next. The public reaction showed how very British stories of human injustice can unite all walks of life, and affect real world change.”
