There is no new Pope.
Hours later than expected, black smoke was seen blowing out of the chimney of the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican on the end of the first day of the conclave to elect a successor to Pope Francis. The smoke was seen at 9:01 pm Rome time.
With 133 cardinals voting, a conclave record and many of the participants relatively new to their positions, it was widely anticipated that there would not be a new Pope today.
