FX has greenlighted Cry Wolf, a limited series starring and executive produced by Oscar winners Olivia Colman and Brie Larson and created, executive produced and showrun by Sarah Treem.
The project, inspired by the Danish series Ulven Kommer (Cry Wolf) by Maja Jul Larsen, is a psychological family thriller following a social worker (Colman) and a mother (Larson) thrust into crisis when the mother’s teenage daughter alleges abuse, pushing both women to their limits as they navigate an impossible situation.
Produced by FX Productions, Cry Wolf had been in priority development at FX where it was set up earlier this year by Treem, Colman via her South of the River Pictures and Melissa Bernstein of Special Interests. Bringing in Larson as the co-lead opposite Colman sealed the project’s series order.
Treem, Colman, Larson, South of the River’s Ed Sinclair and Bernstein executive produce alongside Alena Smith, Maja Jul Larsen, Christian Rank and Claudia Saganario on behalf of DR Sales, the format arm of DR that the original Danish series was produced for.
Cry Wolf reunites Colman with FX where she starred in Great Expectations and most recently guest starred on The Bear, earning an Emmy nomination last year. It was her fifth Emmy nomination; Colman won for The Crown in 2021. (She also has a Children’s and Family Emmy Award for Heartstoper.) On the feature side, Colman has three Oscar nominations, winning in 2019 for The Favourite. She stars opposite John Lithgow in Jimpa, which premiered at Sundance, and opposite Benedict Cumberbatch in Jay Roach’s upcoming The Roses, a reimagining of The War Of The Roses. Colman is repped by CAA, UK’s United Agents and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole.
Larson, known for her MCU role as Captain Marvel, won an Oscar in 2016 for Room. She executive produced and starred in Apple TV+’s Lessons in Chemistry, earning Emmy, SAG and Golden Globe nominations. Larson is represented by WME and Robert Offer.
Treem co-created and showran the Showtime series The Affair, which ran for five seasons and won a Golden Globe for Best Drama series. Her resume includes writer-producer stints on Netflix’s House Of Cards and HBO’s In Treatment. As a playwright, her most recent work, When We Were Young and Unafraid, was staged in New York with Cherry Jones in the lead. Treem is repped by CAA and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole. DR Sales is repped by CAA.
