Friday Night Lights alum Scott Porter is open to revisiting the show’s universe in Peacock’s reboot, but he also acknowledges that his character had a great conclusion in the original series.
Deadline first reported the streamer landing the reboot in December. Porter played a prominent role in the first three seasons of Friday Night Lights as Jason Street, the former star quarterback of the Dillon Panthers who is shockingly paralyzed during a football game in the pilot episode. The injury forces Jason on a difficult journey to rediscover himself and carve a new path, once football is no longer an option.
“I love the way that Jason Street’s story ended. I think his final couple of scenes with Tim [Riggins] in New York tell you everything you need to know,” Porter told Deadline. “That’s a friendship that will never die, that will always exist. Doesn’t matter, across state lines, anywhere throughout the world, but Jason got out of Dillon in spite of this catastrophic injury.”
Porter officially exited the series in 2008. After years of trying to make it work in Dillon, including a stint as an assistant coach for the Panthers, Jason realizes his life is leading him elsewhere and moves to New York City to pursue a career as a sports agent. However, he does return for a guest appearance in Season 5, giving audiences a glimpse at his successes.
“He has a child, he has a wife, he has a family, he has a job at a successful sports agency. I mean, this guy has it made at this point,” Porter continued.

Original showrunner Jason Katims is on board for the reboot, as is original director Pete Berg and producer Brian Grazer. The trio will executive produce alongside Kristen Zolner for Imagine Entertainment.
“I loved my time on Friday Night Lights, and I would 100% go back, but only if it serves the story. I trust Pete Berg and Jason Katims and everyone involved that this next chapter of Friday Night Lights is going to be just as special, if not more than what we were able to do,” Porter added. ”I’m looking forward to watching it as a fan, and if they want me back, yeah, I’d love to stop by and say, ‘Texas forever’ once again.”
When Deadline spoke to FNL alumna Minka Kelly, who starred as Lyla Garrity, during press for her new Netflix show Ransom Canyon, Kelly indicated that she wouldn’t be returning to the reboot. Lyla dated Jason in the show.
